Filed under: Bulls , Magic ORLANDO — As teammates for the Eastern Conference, Dwight Howard talked to Chicago’s young Derrick Rose at All-Star Weekend, almost apologizing for knocking him on his rear end just a couple days before. He also gave him some advice about driving the lane against shot blocking centers like him. Rose obviously didn’t listen. Just a month after he did it the first time, Howard knocked Rose out of a Magic - Bulls game early again Thursday night, sending him into the locker room for treatment. At least this time, Rose finished the first quarter. Both departures came after drives to the basket that Howard was determined to protect. On Feb. 10, in the last game before the All-Star break, Rose went up for a layup just three minutes into the game, only to have Howard knock him hard to the floor, sustaining a painful hip injury. He took one free throw and left the game. Although Rose played in the All-Star Game, he withdrew from both the Rookie/Sophomore game and the Skills Challenge because of the hip injury. ? by Michael David Smith Filed under: MMA Videos , UFC The UFC has posted the full Countdown show for UFC on Versus 1 to its YouTube channel, and I think the most telling words are the five words that open the show, right after the standard introduction. Those five words, spoken by Joe Rogan , are: ” Jon Jones is a star.” Countdown to UFC on Versus: ‘Jon Jones Is a Star’ originally appeared on MMA Fighting on Thu, 11 Mar 2010 20:05:00 EST . by Michael David Smith Filed under: DREAM , News Before his positive steroid test caused the fight to be scrapped, Josh Barnett was scheduled to fight Fedor Emelianenko in a heavyweight clash of the titans last summer. Now Barnett is just a week and a half away from a return to MMA after more than a year off — and he’s expected to face a slightly easier opponent than Fedor. Josh Gross of SI.com reports that Barnett is likely to face Siala “Mighty Mo” Siliga at Dream.13 on March 22. That’s a rather embarrassing step down in quality of opposition for Barnett, and a reminder of just how far Barnett has fallen since eight months ago, when he was regarded by many as the No. 2 heavyweight in the world and a real threat to Fedor. Filed under: Giants , Prospects , Advanced Scouting , Spring Training SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — You have to take spring training performances with a large grain or salt, good or bad. No one is going to be too concerned with an ace pitcher who struggles in mid-March. However, for many young players the spring is far more important. It is a proving ground for them. For young pitchers like Madison Bumgarner , who is looking to nail down the fifth spot in the Giants rotation, there are a number of questions to be answered. By the end of the 2009 season, many fans began to wonder what had happened to the powerful, front-of-the-rotation-starter type of stuff Bumgarner was said to have. His decreased velocity in his brief big-league stint was attributed to a long season, but now, early in the spring, the questions still linger. ? Permalink ?|? Email this ?|? Linking?Blogs ?|? Filed under: Timberwolves Over at TrueHoop , there’s a fun and uplifting conversation with noted guru Idan Ravin regarding his recent work with the Minnesota Timberwolves . It talks about the work being done in developing players, the mental challenges the players are facing, and the potential with that team. It’s a really interesting interview with a great basketball mind. Too bad the franchise in question has about as much of a future as buggy whips. ? Permalink ?|? Email this ?|? Linking?Blogs ?|? Filed under: Giants , Spring Training SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — This really is stealing money. As I walk through the cacti sprinkled among the palm, ash and eucalyptus trees outside of Scottsdale Stadium, it is the prettiest Thursday ever in the Valley of the Sun. Now I’m moving downstairs to the clubhouse of the San Francisco Giants , masters at combining their past with their present. This is more so than usual for the Giants . This actually is unbelievable. That’s because, after I enter the doors ahead, I’m face to face with Hall of Fame history around a table. Gaylord Perry. Orlando Cepeda. Willie McCovey. Then Perry rises, wobbles in my direction (since he is rather large these days at 71) and sticks out his hand. It isn’t for me. It’s for the slow-moving guy behind me in a spiffy gray suit, custom-made white shirt and red tie. “Hi, my name is Gaylord Perry,” he says, shaking hands with the other guy, whose name is Willie Mays, otherwise known as baseball royalty. ? Filed under: Jets , NFL Free Agency The NFL ’s free safety wheel continues to spin this offseason. Less than a week after dealing Kerry Rhodes to Arizona — who needed to replace Antrell Rolle — the Jets found Rhodes’ replacement in free agent Brodney Pool . Pool reached an agreement with New York Thursday night. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that Pool’s deal will be for one year and $1.3 million. Cleveland made Pool the 34th-overall pick in the 2005 draft and he developed into a steady starter for the Browns . Pool started all 16 games in 2007, 15 in 2008 and 10 last year. But he missed the final five games of 2009 with a concussion. Free Agency Tracker: Browns Also Lose Hadnot to Cardinals ? Permalink ?|? Email this ?|? Linking?Blogs ?|? Comments

Filed under: Steelers , NFL Quarterbacks The news just gets worse and worse for Ron Mexico Roethlisberger. That’s bad news for all of us who want to take the high road. Anytime somebody is accused of a crime we invoke “innocent until proven guilty” and giving people the “benefit of the doubt.” Then I read where Roethlisberger was in a bathroom last Friday night. Not just any bathroom, but a women’s bathroom. At a college bar. At 2:30 a.m. With an underage 20-year-old coed. This raises a few questions: Was the men’s room full? Is Big Ben a closet transvestite? Did the girl request a private reenactment of Roethlisberger’s 2006 motorcycle crash? Yeah, that’s it. Then she slipped, banged her head, and encountered Roethlisberger’s DNA and suddenly got $$$ in her eyes. ? Permalink ?|? Email this ?|? Linking?Blogs ?|? Comments

Filed under: MLS The March 25 opener of the MLS regular season is approaching quickly and the players, absent a new collective bargaining agreement, are having some trouble keeping their composure. On Wednesday, veteran Toronto Nick Garcia (pictured, left) told CBC that the players are “anticipating not having the season starting” on time and that they will strike without a new deal. On Thursday afternoon, players told The Washington Post and Big Apple Soccer that union membership has approved a strike by a nearly-unanimous margin (only two were against a stoppage) and that the chance of finding common ground with the league over the next two weeks “doesn’t look good at all.” Without specifics, it’s unclear whether this bluster constitutes yet another negotiating ploy or whether the union really is prepared to go nuclear. Could they genuinely be considering blowing the whole thing up in protest of the structural and economic principles that allow them to be professional soccer players in the first place? ? Filed under: European Soccer , International , English Premier League , Soccer Posts , U.S. Men’s National Team In the wake of Stuart Holden ’s broken leg suffered in last week’s friendly vs. the Netherlands, the amount of injuries to key players on the U.S. National Team had reached such a crisis point where you’d almost have to think Landon Donovan was looking over his shoulder at all times for signs of black cats crossing his path. Thursday the U.S. received a doubly good shot in the arm with positive updates from a pair of would-be starters at the upcoming World Cup in June as both Clint Dempsey and Charlie Davies made progress from their respective injuries. Dempsey came on as a sub in Fulham’s 3-1 loss in Turin to Juventus in the Europa League, while Davies continues to take positive strides in his rehabilitation in France. ? Permalink ?|?
