Filed under: Colts , Saints , NFL Coaching , Super Bowl , NFL Quarterbacks FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — With confetti and congratulations pouring down on him after Sunday’s 31-17 Super Bowl XLIV ambush of the favored Indianapolis Colts , New Orleans Saints coach Sean Payton - a guy who likes to celebrate — said he wasn’t sure he would make it to the traditional Monday morning winners’ news conference. He showed up, hair uncombed, bleary eyed, looking every bit like someone who had just spent a sleepless night. Except that Payton did get some shut-eye, with some interesting company at his side. Holding the Lombardi Trophy in his hands as he faced the cameras one last time before heading back to the Crescent City for what promises to be an epic “Who Dat” victory parade, Payton doesn’t sound like a guy who’s eager to let it go anytime soon. “This thing laid in my bed next to me last night,” Payton said, holding the NFL ’s championship hardware like it was a much-loved teddy bear. “I rolled over a couple of times. I probably drooled on it. But man, there’s nothing like it.” The sterling silver Lombardi Trophy has a special connection to the Saints ‘ organization. It is named for Vince Lombardi , the legendary Green Bay Packers coach. And Lombardi’s grandson, Joe, is the Saints quarterback coach. ? Permalink ?|? Email this ?|? Linking?Blogs ?|? Comments

Filed under: Cubs , NL Central , MLB Biz When Tom Ricketts bought the Chicago Cubs from the Tribune Company for around $740 million last October, it wasn’t just the team he was buying. He also got Wrigley Field in the deal. Wrigley may be an icon in and of itself, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t plenty of areas in which the 96-year old stadium could us an upgrade. Ricketts has plenty of plans to improve the park, but up first he’d like to make some changes to the luxury suites. While he’s renovating two of the luxury boxes in the park into one large ownership suite, there are also plans to build an all-inclusive club for season ticket holders . ? Permalink ?|? Filed under: Sports Business and Media As it did for the New Orleans Saints offense, it took a while for CBS’ telecast of Sunday’s Super Bowl to catch fire, but once it did, the network’s broadcast was up to the challenge. With game analyst Phil Simms turning in a fine performance, and good replays, particularly in the decisive fourth quarter, CBS’ 17th telecast of a Super Bowl was among its most memorable, even if it started slowly. Simms, working his sixth Super Bowl, was especially strong, weaving in behind-the-scenes knowledge with solid insight. For instance, his second quarter point that the Indianapolis Colts ‘ defense hadn’t seen a solid passing attack in weeks proved particularly prescient in the second half when Drew Brees began to connect with New Orleans receivers on short, quick passes. ? Filed under: Celtics , Kings , NBA Rumors In retrospect, Danny Ainge has executed no trade as brilliant as the one which in essence sent the fifth pick in the 2007 draft and Delonte West to Seattle for Ray Allen . It was a huge risk at the time: Allen had come off double ankle surgery, at age 31. The player the Celtics were purported to be leaning toward in the draft — Yi Jianlian — was a highly coveted mystery. It wasn’t a no-brainer, like the Kevin Garnett - Al Jefferson deal. Ray has been utterly healthy since coming to Boston, though — he’s played in 94 percent of the Celtics ‘ games in the 2-1/2 seasons, just two games fewer than ironman Paul Pierce and a full 35 games more than the younger Garnett. And he’s been good, too, a key component of the 2008 title run and a stunningly efficient weapon in 2009. ? Permalink ?|? Email this ?|? Linking?Blogs ?|? Comments

Filed under: Capitals , Penguins , NHL Videos It’s been established. Alex Ovechkin is a one-man highlight reel. There might not be a hockey player whose goals get more hits on YouTube, and for good reason, because it seems he’s doing something special on at least a weekly basis. He added to his long list of memorable goals Sunday at Verizon Center. As his Capitals staged a furious rally to beat Pittsburgh 5-4 in overtime , Ovechkin became the first NHL player to hit 40 goals this season. Before he added his 41st and 42nd goals later in the game, he did something he has yet to do in his career (outside of the his hat tricks). He scored a goal that forced a stoppage of the game. ? by Mike Chiappetta Filed under: UFC , News I’m not sure what more we can learn from Randy Couture at this stage of his career. He is what he is, and that’s pretty amazing. Even if you’re the cynical type that’s not impressed with a victory over a 45-year-old opponent, you have to give Couture a tip of the cap for competing three times in the last seven months. That’s hard to do when you’re 26, let alone 46. Couture aside, here are my takeaways from UFC 109. Filed under: Saints , NFL Video , Super Bowl MIAMI — When a team starts the season 13-0 and cruises into the playoffs, it may seem like they haven’t played in a “big” game. But Saints head coach Sean Payton insists that his team has been playing in — and winning — big-time games all season long. Dan Graziano reports on how that has prepared them for Sunday.
