Newt Gingrich’s campaign released a web video attacking Mitt Romney Friday, hitting the former Massachusetts governor for his efforts to “mislead, distort and deceive” on the campaign trail. Gingrich’s team used several of Romney’s comments from Thursday night’s Republican presidential debate as fodder for the ad, which claims Romney has told several fibs to win over voters. The video shoots down Romney’s claim that he has always voted Republican with reference to the 1992 Massachusetts primary, when Romney voted for a “liberal Democrat” instead of Pat Buchanan or George H.W. Bush. The spot also fact-checks Romney’s claim that his investments in Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac were part of a blind trust . Read More… More on Newt Gingrich

Just three weeks after the Detroit Children’s Museum abruptly announced it would close due to lack of funding , the museum is once again open — but only to Detroit Public Schools students. The school district, which owns the Children’s Museum but has not managed it since 2009, severed its contract with the debt-ridden Detroit Science Center, which had been operating the museum since 2010. Student groups from DPS will now be able to use the museum 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. According to a release from DPS, the district is still working to make the institution available to the public. Read More… More on Detroit Public Schools

McDonald’s said this week that it was no longer using the controversial ground beef additive known as “pink slime” in its hamburger recipe. Taco Bell and Burger King have also reportedly repudiated the “slime,” which consists of spare beef trimmings that have been treated with ammonium hydroxide to make them safe and at least semi-palatable. The move came after “Food Revolution” and “Naked Chef” star Jamie Oliver made public calls for chains to abandon the “slime,” which has been manufactured by Beef Products Inc since 2001. Some are pointing to his advocacy as a central factor behind McDonald’s decision. Even if Oliver was the most prominent critic of “pink slime,” though, he wasn’t alone. The New York Times raised serious doubts about “pink slime” in a 2009 investigation of the product. It was also criticized in the 2010 documentary “Food Inc.” Read More… More on Video

Last week I saw a link to a website that listed “10 Handsome Men (Who Were Born Female).” The longer I thought about the list, the more troubled I became, because this list favors specific types of trans men: famous, white, masculine, passing trans guys. Read More… More on Transgender

RALEIGH, N.C. — Because Cyrano weighs more than 20 pounds, amputating his cancer-weakened leg was out of the question. So the tubby tabby’s owners turned to doctors and engineers at North Carolina State University to get him back into mice-catching trim. On Thursday, the 10-year-old cat from Upperville, Va., received what doctors believe is the first feline total knee replacement in the U.S. Read More… More on Video

People are drawn to the South for many reasons — its welcome drawl, the lively music, the gorgeous architecture — but most of all, people love the South for its rich and soul-satisfying cuisine. From crispy fried chicken to smoked barbecue to sweet cornbread and tangy collard greens, there are a great many culinary riches in this region. But, there is one dish in particular that has captivated our hearts and stomachs here at Kitchen Daily, and that dish goes by the name of pimento cheese. It’s almost unfair that those who grew up in the South got to enjoy this spread their entire life. Kids are fed a quick lunch of white bread and pimento cheese sandwiches. The spread is served as a topping on baked potatoes (you won’t miss the sour cream and chives), hotdogs and hamburgers. And a bowl of pimento cheese with a stack of saltines makes a great hors d’oeuvres, too. Pimento cheese is a simple dish to recreate in your home kitchen. There are certainly variations to be found according to region and resource, but essentially it is just cheese (we like it with cheddar), mayonnaise, pimentos and salt. You mix it all together and the outcome is like nothing you would expect. It’s rich and creamy, with just a little bit of spice — all the ingredients come together in just the right way. With ” The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills ” reunion set to air Monday night on Bravo, Kyle Richards sat down for an interview with ” Good Morning America ” (weekdays, 7 a.m. EST on ABC) to talk about her sister Kim Richards’ struggles with alcohol abuse , and just how stressful the reunions can be. The segment started off with a preview clip from the show in which Kim admits that she’s an alcoholic. Reflecting on her at times rocky relationship with her sister, Kyle told “GMA” that, “There was a lot of passive agressiveness going on between the two of us … The limo fight … there were things going on that the audience wasn’t aware of. I had a lot of pain and built-up anger and frustration towards her and obviously she did towards me too. It was a vicious cycle,” she explained. Richards also discussed the psychological toll that the “Housewives” reunions take on the cast. “It’s really like mental torture sitting there with all the women. We put our arguments to rest a few months ago and then all of the sudden to rehash everything, is very painful. And if you’re very honest and people are highly sensitive, it leads to an argument again. I always laugh because in the morning we’re running around and laughing, going back and forth to each other’s dressing rooms, and by the end of the day, there are always a few who aren’t talking or whose feelings are hurt.” Read More… More on TV Replay

Weeks after a judge ordered the removal of a prayer banner at a Rhode Island school, the atheist teen at the center of the controversy continues to receive threats as the school board decides its next move. Since 2010, Jessica Ahlquist had been urging school officials to remove the banner from the auditorium at Cranston High School West. The 8-foot banner features a prayer a student wrote in 1963 — a prayer some consider part of the school’s history. Read More… More on Video
