Marlon Byrd Signs With Cubs

Filed under: Cubs , NL Central , MLB Transactions In a long anticipated and hardly surprising move, the Chicago Cubs have finally signed free agent outfielder Marlon Byrd to a three-year, $15 million contract. The Cubs and Byrd had been connected the entire offseason in rumors and were even rumored to be trying to trade for him a few years back. Needless to say, general manager Jim Hendry has an affinity for the 32-year-old. Byrd was a full-time starter for the first time in his career last season, compiling a .283 average with 20 home runs, 89 RBI and an .808 OPS for the Texans Rangers . He is expected to immediately become the Cubs’ starting center-fielder, as they shift Kosuke Fukudome back to his natural position, right field. Byrd is a late bloomer, as he’s enjoyed his three best seasons in the past three years. He seemed to thrive under the tutelage of hitting coach Rudy Jaramillo, whom the Cubs snatched away from Texas this offseason. ? Permalink ?|? Email this ?|? Linking?Blogs ?|? Comments
